General Info
Founded as a sugar plantation in the mid 1800s and incorporated in 1959, Sugar Land is located in Fort Bend County, 20 miles southwest of downtown Houston. Sugar Land is a full-service municipality providing police and fire protection, water/wastewater utilities, solid waste collection, curbside recycling, a regional airport, parks and recreation, public works, planning/zoning and other services.

Education
Fort Bend Independent School District was created by the consolidation of the Sugar Land ISD and Missouri City ISD in 1959. Fort Bend ISD has ten high schools, the newest being Travis High School. Thirteen middle schools,the newest being Crockett Middle School. and fourty-one elementary schools, the newest being Cornerstone, Rosa Park, and ES #39. The school district also has the Technical Education Center, the M.R. Wood Alternative Education Center, and the Progressive High School to serve a variety of vocational interests as well as special learning needs.
